Morgan Motor Company is pleased to announce that it will lead a £6m project to develop new powertrain technologies, in collaboration with UK companies Delta Motorsport and Potenza Technology. With funding from the UK’s Advanced Propulsion Centre, the consortium will develop hybrid and electric powertrain systems which will significantly reduce vehicle CO2 emissions and deliver best-in-class fuel economy.

The technologies developed through this project will be introduced progressively on Morgan’s range of hand-built sports cars from 2019, with hybrid propulsion available on all of its models by the end of the decade. The advantages in terms of performance, fuel economy and refinement are expected to increase demand across its most important markets in UK and across Europe. This will result in a growth of the workforce at the Malvern factory and within the partnering companies.

Morgan Managing Director, Steve Morris said “This is a very exciting project for us. We have been involved in the research and development of new propulsion technology since the inception of the LifeCar project almost ten years ago. We are now ready to develop the best hybrid and electric drive-train solutions for production implementation before the end of the decade. We expect the project to deliver growth and employment benefits here at Morgan and in our partner companies, but equally it will broaden the appeal of the Morgan brand and attract new customers in our key markets.”

The funding was announced by the Government’s Business Secretary, Sajid Javid, as part of his visit to the Morgan factory in Malvern Link last Friday (15/01/2016). During his visit, the Secretary of State was given a tour of the factory by Steve Morris, as well as being introduced to employees in key areas of the business.

On Wednesday 23rd March, HRH The Prince of Wales met with a group of Cumbrian young farmers learning practical flood resilience driving skills at the Rookin House Activity Centre near Penrith. The visit marks a renewed three-year partnership between his charity, The Prince’s Countryside Fund and Land Rover with this year’s launch of The Prince’s Countryside Fund Land Rover bursary scheme.

This valuable bursary seeks to award up to five inspiring young people aged 21 to 35 the use of a Land Rover Discovery Sport for a year to support the development of their countryside careers.

The UK countryside is in desperate need of talented young people. The average age of a British farmer is 59 and only 4% of the UK’s farmers are under 35. Environmental conservation requires an estimated 30,000 new entrants by 2020 to maintain and protect our countryside, while in forestry, 53% of the workforce is over the age of 40.

During his visit to Cumbria, HRH The Prince of Wales joined the young farmers in their vehicle training as they developed skills in driving and reversing trailers in and around obstacles, learnt how to check water depth and flow of flooding before carefully driving through the water, and navigated their way around an off-road driving circuit.

He also met Mark Curr, Helen Rebanks and her son Issac, the first recipients of the Land Rover Bursary in 2013, to find out how it benefited them. Mark runs a sheep enterprise and is the Chairman of Cumbria Young Farmers; an association that supports young farmers in the region. Helen and her husband James Rebanks are hill farmers at Racy Ghyll Farm, Matterdale. Helen used the Land Rover to transport school children to their “Herdwick School” on the farm, educating the next generation about life and farming on the fells.

HRH The Prince of Wales joined the young farmers in training, getting behind the wheel of a Discovery Sport and drove through a beck experiencing the techniques of how to drive in water and negotiate the rocky river bed under the guidance of a Land Rover Experience Instructor.

Jeremy Hicks, Jaguar Land Rover UK Managing Director said, “Land Rover is synonymous with the countryside and we’re looking for the UK’s most enterprising young people who would benefit from the use of a Land Rover Discovery Sport. Access to a 4×4 vehicle can be crucial to getting a rural business off the ground. By providing a vehicle with capability to tackle the most challenging of rural terrains, space for seven and excellent towing capacity, we are aiming to help five ambitious young people to further their rural careers.”

Claire Saunders, Director of The Prince’s Countryside Fund said “There’s an acute need for young people to be supported to enter farming and related careers and a multitude of opportunity waiting for them. Whether you’re new to farming, starting a “field to fork” food business or keen to bring new technologies and your skills to the countryside, The Prince’s Countryside Fund is here to support you. That’s why we’re delighted to be working in partnership with Land Rover to provide such practical and valuable support to young people starting out in their rural careers.”

Applications must be made online by 29th April 2016. The Prince’s Countryside Fund Land Rover Bursary is open to UK residents aged between 21 to 35 living and working in a rural area. The new McLaren 570GT, the third model in the Sports Series, and the most luxurious and refined McLaren sports car to date, will be revealed at the 86th Geneva International Motor Show.

The new McLaren 570GT is the most refined and road-biased McLaren ever built. Designed with a focus on day-to-day usability and long-distance touring capability, it offers increased levels of practicality and comfort, yet remains a true McLaren sports car. The third model in the recently announced Sports Series family – alongside the 570S Coupé and 540C Coupé – the 570GT will make its world debut at the 86th Geneva International Motor Show on 1 March 2016.

It shares key attributes with other Sports Series models, including the unique-in-class carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis, but the clean lines of the new glasshouse give the latest McLaren model a sleek and refined silhouette – and mark out the second of three bodystyles which will eventually complete the Sports Series. The design also sees the 570GT adopt a unique aerodynamic package, including an extended fixed rear spoiler designed to offer the same levels of aerodynamic performance as the distinctive flying buttresses found on the Coupé models.

The standard fixed glass Panoramic Roof creates a bright and open cabin, with the dramatic glasshouse design running through to the side-opening Glass Hatch. Framed by carbon fibre to provide significant torsional rigidity, the Glass Hatch opens on the kerbside whether left- or right-hand drive and gives access to 220 litres of stowage space, available behind the seats on the leather-lined Touring Deck. With the front luggage area unchanged from the Coupé, the new 570GT offers 370 litres of stowage, making road-trips comfortable in this two-seat, mid-engined sports car.

With the increased glass area, the 570GT features an enhanced dual-zone air conditioning system, and the roof glass is treated with an 18 percent tint and features SSF (Sound & Solar Film) to absorb solar radiation while providing additional noise insulation. Refinement and day-to-day usability are further enhanced through the latest technology from technical partner Pirelli: bespoke P Zero™ tyres with the innovative Pirelli Noise Cancelling System (PNCS) reduce in-cabin road noise.

Extensively equipped throughout with the latest technologies and the highest quality materials, the new 570GT features luxurious leather upholstery, eight-way electrically adjustable heated seats, front and rear parking sensors, an electric steering column with easy entry / exit function, soft-close doors and a quieter exhaust system compared to the 570S Coupé. The eight-speaker McLaren Audio Plus system is fitted as standard, and a Bowers & Wilkins system – retuned to the different interior acoustics of the 570GT – is also available.

The 570GT has also been developed with a unique dynamic set-up to create a sports car with breathtaking performance yet increased levels of luxury and refinement. Sharing the newly developed suspension with the other models in the Sports Series, the 570GT emphasises long-distance comfort with fine-tuning including a reduction in spring rate stiffness – 15 percent at the front and 10 percent at the rear. The electro-hydraulic steering system is retained from the Coupé models but with a reduced ratio – by two percent – specifically designed to smooth out driver inputs at high cruising speed.

Yet the 570GT remains a pure McLaren. As with all McLaren road and race cars since the introduction of the groundbreaking MP4/1 Formula 1™ car in 1981, the 570GT uses a carbon fibre chassis. Shared across the Sports Series models, the MonoCell II weighs just 75kg, and the lightweight yet extremely stiff chassis contributes to a dry weight of 1350kg (2976lb). Combined with a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine producing 570PS (562bhp) and 600Nm (443lb ft), the power-to-weight ratio of 422PS (416bhp) per tonne is incredible. And with power delivered to the rear wheels via a seven-speed seamless-shift transmission, the breathtaking performance is more commonly seen in the supercar segment: 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 328 km/h (204 mph). Add in Handling and Powertrain adjustment through Normal, Sport and Track settings, and the 570GT produces one of the most rewarding and engaging driving experiences in the sports car class.

The all new location in the heart of Milan consists of a showroom measuring 500 m² and a state-of-the-art workshop and aftersales centre. Following eight months of construction and substantial investment, Bentley Milan welcomed more than 300 customers and guests to the new showroom for the first time yesterday.

Robert Engstler, Regional Director, Bentley Europe, said at the opening: “This is a great day for Bentley in Italy. With this new retailer we ensure that our customers have a unique Bentley experience and we are proud to set a new benchmark in the luxury automotive market here in Italy. I am glad we took this important step together with our partners at Bentley Milan.”

Being the only Bentley retailer in Italy, Bentley Milan offers customers the full model range, pre-owned vehicles, as well as aftersales service and the company’s branded luxury goods.

The showroom opening marks market-entry for the all-new Bentayga, the fastest, most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive SUV in the world.

The new showroom reflects Bentley’s new global corporate identity, taking inspiration from the company’s rich history and combining it with modern-day luxury retailing. It also features a private personalisation area where customers can choose from the brand’s broad palette of exterior paints and leather options.

Bentley Milan and the Fassina Group combine in-depth knowledge of the market with a successful track record of automotive retailing.

BBC reports that Aston Martin is to build its new luxury car in south Wales, creating 750 highly-skilled jobs

The DBX car will be hand-made in a super hangar at St Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan. It is a major coup for Wales, which took two years to secure the deal ahead of 20 locations across the world. As well as attracting one of motoring’s most prestigious names, it is expected to create around 1,000 jobs with suppliers and local business.

Aston Martin chief executive Andy Palmer called it a “momentous day for Wales” at a news conference in Cardiff on Wednesday. The development will include a skills academy, which will make St Athan and the Vale of Glamorgan a centre of excellence. Work on the factory will start in 2017 and production will start three years later. “We have a wealth of craftsmanship here,” said Mr Palmer. “It takes 200 hours to make a car and to do that we need skilled labour and we have got that skilled labour in Wales, in Great Britain and that played a big part in our decision.”

The company is also bringing more work to its factory and headquarters at Gaydon in Warwickshire bringing the total of jobs created to 1,000. The value of the deal is in the hundreds of millions of pounds, although the Welsh government will not comment on the amount of support it is giving. Mr Palmer said there were a number of reasons why St Athan had been chosen for the new site. “The Welsh offer wasn’t financially enticing but share holders had to understand the balance that had to be made on quality, cost and time, and St Athan was on time,” he said. “We don’t have to build a building. It won through in terms of quality of workforce and supplies and relationship with the government of Wales.”

Each car is individually styled to the buyer’s specifications. In its 103-year history, the company has only sold just over 70,000 cars. To continue to survive at the luxury end of the market it has been looking at broadening its range to appeal to younger – and female – customers. The car will start off as a petrol vehicle before being developed into a hybrid and all-electric 4×4. The prototype was unveiled at the Geneva motor show last year and is expected to cost at least £160,000 to buy.

Mr Palmer said then that the company envisaged a world “perhaps a world not too far away, when luxury GT travel is not only stylish and luxurious but also more practical, more family-friendly and more environmentally responsible”. The design team had in mind a driver who was a young woman, American – and rich. The fictitious customer was dubbed Charlotte and seen as “an attractive lady, cool, in her 30s”.

_88412304_88412303

First Minister Carwyn Jones said it was the start of a long-term relationship between Wales and Aston Martin. “We will work together in building on the strong foundations of our partnership to nurture a prosperous and rewarding future for this iconic company and its skilled workforce in Wales,” he said. Welsh Secretary Stephen Crabb called the announcement an “enormous boost” for Wales and the British car industry. He added: “It is a genuine example of a ‘one nation’ achievement, with both the UK and Welsh governments working together to attract this prestige manufacturer to Welsh shores.” Speaking on BBC Radio Wales, Mr Palmer said the company had chosen Wales because it was “the best offer”. “I don’t simply mean in terms of money. What really swung it was the passion and the professionalism of the people we dealt with in Wales,” he said. Economy Minister Edwina Hart AM said: “We had an excellent relationship with Aston Martin at official and ministerial level. “The important thing for us was ensuring that Aston Martin stayed in the UK, a fine company for the UK. “We fought very hard to ensure we were on the list and now we’ve achieved having it.

“This is a win not just for Wales but for the UK.”

  • Sector-defining SUV designed, engineered and handcrafted in Crewe
  • Car marks significant UK manufacturing investment
  • First Bentayga to join Bentley’s famous Heritage Collection
  • (Crewe, 27 November 2015) The very first production Bentley Bentayga, the catalyst for one of the biggest investment programmes in the company’s history, today left the assembly line at Bentley’s iconic headquarters in Crewe, UK.

Four years on from the initial concept stage, during which time over 1,500 UK jobs have been created, the car – part of an £840 million investment programme – will now enter full production, with deliveries to customers starting in January 2016.

Wolfgang Dürheimer, Chairman and Chief Executive of Bentley Motors, said: “Bentley Bentayga will be the benchmark against which all other SUVs are measured, defining a new segment – the luxury SUV.

“This car is a celebration of UK manufacturing at its very best, not only reinforcing our commitment to industry in this country, job creation and significant investment, but to our home in Crewe. This is an important moment in our history, where we reflect and celebrate, but also look ahead to delivering this extraordinary car to our customers.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues from all parts of the business for their dedication and professionalism in delivering the Bentley Bentayga. It would not have been possible to deliver this car without the support and belief from the UK Government, our parent company and other business partners. We can all take pride in this achievement.”

The first production Bentayga, finished in paint colour – Anthracite – was handcrafted across 130 hours. During the assembly process, the car passed through a new bodystore, a new paint shop and a new assembly line, all part of this substantial investment.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron, commented: “I am delighted that the first Bentley Bentayga has rolled off the production line in Crewe. It marks the culmination of a period of exceptional hard work by Bentley and its dedicated workforce as they brought this remarkable new vehicle to market.

“The Bentayga represents an ambitious £800 million investment into the Crewe factory backed by £9.5 million from the Regional Growth Fund. It has created hundreds of valuable skilled jobs for the area and secured the future of production onsite.

“Well done to all at Bentley. This is a moment of great pride for everyone who lives and works in Crewe.”

Michael Straughan, Bentley’s Member of the Board for Manufacturing, addressed the company’s 4,000-strong workforce as the car was driven from the final production stage. He said: “This is a proud moment for the entire company. It’s been four years in the making and is a celebration of a sector-defining British handcrafted car.

“Bentayga is the Bentley of SUVs, with a level of attention to detail only achievable thanks to the outstanding skill of a British workforce that blends exceptional craft and skill with modern production techniques and materials.”
